We will be having a multicultural theme, so please come dressed to represent a special country for you. The major activity will be some multi-cultural cooking, but we will have some fun activities as well. The special night will meet the requirements for the “Heritage” section of the Pioneer and Explorer citizenship badges (for Scouts) AND The “International Culture” part of the Bronze and Silver Boomerangs (for Cubs.)

The weather was quite inclement at the start, leaving our Scouts worried about spending an entire day in the rain. Luckily for them the rain lifted and was not much of a problem most of the day. Until the hailstorm as the Scouts arrived at the finish line, that is.

The 1st of August is World Scout Day… and at AJ2010, Scouts Australia’s National Team launched the World Scout $ Day project, where we are asking every Scout in Australia to donate $1 by the 1st of August. Think about it… if every member of Scouts Australia donates just $1 each, that’s over $66,000!

The funds raised for World Scout $ Day will be sent to the World Organisation of the Scouting Movement to support the Food For Life project in the African Region. [...]

What is the Food For Life program?

The first step to poverty alleviation is food security. Food security cannot be achieved through short-term solutions (such as giving people food) – people living in areas that suffer food shortages must be taught to produce their own food in a sustainable way in order to survive in the long-term.

The Food For Life program teaches Scouts in Africa to grow food for themselves and their families, and provides them with seeds and the equipment to do it. All the nutritional needs of a family can be met with the produce of a tiny garden, 1.25 square metres per person. Families that have the ability to grow their own food need never be hungry again, and they also have the capacity to earn money by selling the food they grow.

National Science Week 2010 is rapidly approaching. This year’s celebration will be from the 14th to the 22nd of August, 2010. There are events for all ages right around the country, so be sure to take a look for an event that will interest your budding scientifically curious Scout!

The Victorian site for National Science Week is called re-science – take a look there for some great events like :

• The Australian Synchrotron is having an Open Day on Sunday 15th August 2010
• Dr Karl’s talk “Dinosaurs Aren’t Dead!” on Sunday 8th August 2010
• “From Slime to Dinosaurs!” where visitors will be able to explore our exhibitions and children will be able to participate in hands-on activities on Sunday 15th August 2010

Trevor began as a Rover Scout with 9th City of Brunswick in 1947. Today Trevor presents a radio show called “Scouting Around” every Thursday from 6pm to 7pm on 96.5 Inner FM Community Radio. It is the longest running running weekly scout program in Australia and probably in the world!

But the real beginning of the Melbourne Gang Show story came in 1951 when the 9th Brunswick Scout Group staged a musical comedy written by Ralph Reader called “We’ll Live Forever”. The Group Leader of 9th Brunswick John Wass, who had seen the London Gang Show, tried to get Victorian Headquarters to start a Gang Show. They showed no interest and so John Wass set his group to work on a more manageable show. But in 1952 Headquarters decided to back a second season of “We’ll Live Forever” and this led to the establishment of the first Gang Show in 1953 when it was decided that the London Gang Show formula could be presented to Melbourne audiences. Levi Molineux would be its producer / director; and John Wass became the first publicity director. It was clear that there was ample talent and enthusiasm within the various scout groups in Melbourne and its suburbs to emulate the London Gang Show.
